Main contractor chosen for the £460m regeneration of Woking’s town centre

Sir Robert McAlpine has been chosen as the main contractor for the £460m regeneration of Woking’s town centre, a mixed-use project set to start in June. The project that will see around 11,000 sq m of retail space created, alongside 392 residential apartments, a new medical centre and a 190-bed hotel with spa and gym.

Sir Robert McAlpine entered into a pre-construction services contract with the developer for the project last year under the understanding that the firm would take on the main contractor role once funding for the project was agreed. In December 2016, Woking Council members voted in favour of an investment package that would see the project financed by the Public Works Loans Board.

Demolition and enabling work on the existing Woking Market, Post Office and Woking Fire Station has already begun ahead of main construction beginning in the summer. The completion date for the project is 2021.

A number of high-profile retail retailers have signed deals to be housed in the new development, including Marks & Spencer and the hotel owner Hilton.
