Rio Olympics 2016

What Happens to Rio’s Venues After the Olympic Games?

After the medals have all been won, the excitement subsides and the crowds disperse, what happens to Rio’s Olympic venues, once filled with the finest of athletes and most passionate of fans?

This is not a new question. Beijing’s Bird’s Nest stadium incurs huge maintenance fees each year, despite being virtually unused. The Athens 2004 venues have become aging reminders of money that could have been better spent. But Rio wants to build a more sustainable legacy and plans to make some of its venues “nomadic architecture.”

Rio’s Future Arena
Rio’s Future Arena – will be repurposed into four state-run schools in the nearby neighbourhoods. Each school will hold 500 students.

Aquatic Stadium
Aquatic Stadium - will be dismantled and reassembled as two community pools.

Olympic Park
Olympic Park - will be turned into public parks and private development.

International Broadcast Center
The International Broadcast Center - will be repurposed as a high-school dormitory.

X-Park
X-Park in Deodoro – will become an extreme sports centre, located in one of the most densely populated youth areas in Rio.
